Introduction and early progress of the cotton manufacture in the United States Samuel Batchelder 9781177530811 Books

Samuel Batchelder was an inventor and manufacturer of cotton and textiles in the earliest period of the these industries. They were the first factories in the United States, and consequently details on the level Batchelder gives are quite informative concerning the early development of industrial capitalism. Often overlooked, but not by Batchelder, are the details of the different components of the machines, their inventors and patent dates, given here by a man actually involved. As historians one must always question the interpreter's position. In fact, Batchelder questions his own details, since, as he points out, patents frequently overlap, different inventors lay claims, and inventions take place that are not immediately but later incorporated. Nevertheless the view of a man who designed and built factories using this machinery is certainly helpful
